Fab place and great for working mothers, Sunday, 04 March 2007
Le Petit Poucet - French Nursery - 2007/03/04 09:11 Review by member Sohowel:
My son started at Le Petit Poucet in September and I'm very pleased with our choice.
Gregory is nearly 3 years old and a very sensitive kid. The Director, Lamia, its teacher Adele and all the helpers have been fantastic to help him getting used to this new environment. He absolutely loves it.
Being also a working mother, they have been extremely supportive the first few month till we decide how many days he would go to Nursery. None of the other nursery I visited before have been so helpful, supportive for the parents and the kid. There is nothing fancy about the place but they have the right way to take care of the kids and teach them a great deal of things.

A great help for teaching your children to read !, Sunday, 29 October 2006
I love those on-line picture books. My daughter likes to be on the computer and click through the stories. Being able to translate the exact same book into a different language and seeing whether you can figure out that language, too, is also great fun. Simple site with big impact.

German Tutor: Feedback is great., Sunday, 01 October 2006
I just had the first feedback from my neighbours who are using this tutor to get their 7 year-old daughter's German up to standard so she can join German school when they return to Germany. The girl currently goes to an English school. They told me they "love" the approach of this tutor.
Lots of fun - but supervise them !, Monday, 25 September 2006
We did a German cooking fun afternoon before the summer and the kids felt like in Germany (or at least I did, as everyone was speaking nothing but German for 2 hours). That aspect was great and the kids had great fun, too, making German potatoe cakes with apple sauce, then eating them up and playing a fun food game in German. Safety was a worry as the kids (age 5/6) were expected to peel apples and potatoes with sharp knives. So I would say choose the recipe carefully and rather go for German cookies (no knives needed) if the kids are young. There is only one instructor to the group unless you supply extra mums to help for free - another reason to go with older children. For the younger kids, you could always organize a small group at home and make cookies together.
Fun and effective - it is great !, Thursday, 03 August 2006
I have just received these DVD's from the US and my daughter and I watched them. I have to say they are great for learning French from beginner 1 level(they also come for Spanish and German) as they build up the vocabulary slowly and repeat it in new contexts later. The whole vocabulary learning is embedded in a little (very basic) storyline. As the pictures and words match exactly it is easy for the beginner to infer meaning. My daughter already knows some French and after sitting through the entire 1st DVD and half of the second she decided that the vocabulary presented was a little to easy for her. So much for it building confidence, too ! So all in all a great set of DVD's for beginners (and their parents)

Cannot rate it highly enough, Friday, 30 June 2006
I found these comment from Dubai mothers on the internet:

"Both of my children attended Mon Ecole for three years before leaving to attend British schools. It is a wonderful pre school. My children left with an excellent command of french and they enjoyed their time there enormously. A very nurturing, stimulating and creative environment for children that I cannot rate it highly enough."

"My children started there in September. I had heard a lot of good things about the nursery from friends who had their children there. We are very happy and the kids are asking about school all the time. My daughter is coming home singing french songs and my son is not far behind. They also have a great lunch program with home cooked Lebanese food and a report showing how well your child ate each of the courses (soup, main dish and salad). It is a very friendly and loving environment and I think you will find it a nice place for your children. I just asked Maha (the head mistress) about a bus home for the kids and she told me that it was only for the surrounding area. Not sure, but I guess you can talk to her about it in more detail when you arrive."
The best French story DVDs for non-French kids, Monday, 26 June 2006
Of all the many DVD's I have bought (and put aside) to engage my daughter in films in French, the Dora films are by far the best. Your child will have to understand some basic French, but the beauty of the films are that the language is repeated again and again in songs and rhymes, so at the very minimum the kids will remember those parts. The films are also interactive and ask questions, then pause for a reasonable long time, so my 5-year old daughter actually has time to answer in front of the TV. She also gets motivated to do some actions as requested by Dora. I bought the French versions and they try to teach the French kids a few words of English. This also helps to keep those new to French engaged as they hear a few familiar words (but don't worry, there are only a few English words). Each DVD contains 3-4 episodes of about 20 minutes each, which is just the right amount for the beginners to cope. My daughter loves them because they are fun and I love them because she enjoys the films in French (French being her third language).
Lots of good value for money items, Saturday, 17 June 2006
I have found a lot of different materials all by the same company "abajad" which all relate to the letters & words software seperately mentioned on this site. The great thing is that my daughter can easily recognize the words and letters as they are written in exactly the same way as on the software. I bought the wiping board to trace the arabic letters, the foam letters, the hard page and the memory game. I hope to make Arabic learning fun and keep my daughters' interest by changing the medium from software to book to writign activity to game.
I wish more companies (beyond abajad) would provide fun Arabic material.
A fun way of learning the alphabet, Saturday, 17 June 2006
I saw this software at a friend's house and played with it for a while. I loved it as it is entertaining and simple enough to understand - even if you are a (complete) beginner. In fact it comes with the choice of having the instructions in English or Arabic. I will defintely go and buy it for my daughter.
