Signing & multilngualism - 2007/04/15 18:14
Hi all

Has anyone on this board experimented with baby signing? I have heard that it can help in raising a child in more than one language. I am currently raising my 5 month old daughter to speak English and French. I am considering attending signing classes soon and would like to hear from anyone who has tried this.

Thanks!

Hi,

just found this link. Might be helpful to you. Have a look at http://www.tinytalk.co.uk/

I think Christine from our group is using or used signing with her baby. If I see her at the network meeting, I will tell her to contact you.
All best,
Silke

Thanks for your response, Silke! I attended a Tiny Talk class last week anf it was good fun. It would be great if you could ask Christine about her experience of combining it with bilingualism as well.

I will try to attend a network event some time soon although I'll be on holiday over the coming week.

Many thanks,
Star xx

Hi,

I am also doing the tiny talk lessons with my 13 months old son. As he does not speak yet, it is still difficult to say if it helps or not but, he seems to like the signing very much

Best regards,
Caroline

Hi Emily

I use baby sign language with my baby and think its fantastic! He started to sign back to me at 6 months old, and by 8 months he was using lots of signs. He is now 21 months old and uses signs to re-enforce the words he is trying to say. I definately think it has helped his development and the staff and a language therapist at the nursery have all commented on how advanced his communication skills are. I have also read that research in the US has proven an increase in IQ in kids who used signing as babies. See this article http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/AmericanFamily/Story?id=521213&page=1

I don't go to a baby sign class, instead I use this site http://www.babysignlanguage.co.uk

Since using baby sign language I have become interested in teaching my baby other languages – that’s why I joined the ML network
