Dear Breifne,

I have taught a German reading/writing class myself to children who were in English schools but spoke German some of the time. I can probably help you here.
The most important thing is a structured approach to teaching spelling. The kids will naturally use the spelling strategies from their first (writing) language and transfer it 1to1, which doesn't work. You / the school will therefore have to teach the children all the different spelling strategies, sound clusters from the 2nd language step by step. If the second language is English with all its many exceptions, you will also need a learning word list for every week. The challenge, of course, will be to make it fun and integrate it into your children's day without it feeling like too much extra burden (teaching through games is a great way). This are only my topline thoughts. Hope it helps.
