Keeping English writing up in a German environment
Written by Silke Rehman
6 months after we arrived in Germany, Chiara is doing well in German (see previous posts). But remember, what I said in the workshop: "you will be off course 90% of the time". Well, it is still true :-). We now need a solution for English writing to keep her writing levels up. Speaking is no problem as we regularly speak English in the family and have a lot of English speaking friends here (and visitors).

I had noticed the issue back in autumn and realized I needed to develop a plan for promoting English writing. At that time I wanted to give Chiara time, though, to develop a feeling for German spelling and writing first.

Now that the New Year has come, we have started to tackle the issue. We have started to write a book together, an English one of course, full of poems and short stories. We will get it published regardless how good it will turn out. The prospect of getting it published is hugely motivating for Chiara and really makes her eager to write - what more could I ask for ... ?

At the moment I just let her enjoy the creative side of writing in English. I am still thinking about how I can make her improve her spelling without taking away the enthusiasm. Once I have found a solution, I will share it with you.

Good luck with your journey !
